MusiCares provides emergency health and human services and addiction recovery resources to music people. Whether it’s artists or other industry professionals who are in need, MusiCares is there with a safety net of support for those who have given the gift of music to our lives.
MusiCares experienced another landmark year in 2007–2008 by serving more than 1,400 clients with more than $3 million dollars in aid.
Since its inception, MusiCares has developed into a premier support system for music people and its innovative programs and services are designed to meet the specific needs of its constituents.

Mr. Owens has specialized in the Entertainment, Legal and Medical communities in the field of addiction recovery for the past 20 years. Mr. Owens from 1993 to 1999 was the Program Director of the Exodus Treatment Center and has served as a consultant for the State of California’s Impaired Physicians Program, implementing substance abuse treatment strategies for physicians who were either mandated to or volunteered to undergo substance abuse treatment. Mr. Owens also served as a consultant to the governments of Thailand and the Federated States of Micronesia where he was a participant in a program, funded by the World Health Organization, to compare models of substance abuse treatment utilized by foreign governments.
In 1999, Harold was hired by the MusiCares Foundation, the charity arm of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (GRAMMY Organization) As the Senior Director of the MusiCares/MAP Fund, he is responsible for the implementation of all aspects of its addiction recovery program, including treatment services, case management and provider contracts. He is also a frequent moderator and panelist at a number of music industry conferences that address the problems of addiction in the music and entertainment industries.
In October 2001 and again in 2006, Harold received Official Certificates of Commendation from Mayors’ James Hahn and Antonio Villaraigosa for Outstanding Service in the field of Addiction Recovery.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA., Harold is a 1974 graduate of Rutgers University, where he received his B.A. English, and in 1988 he completed the UCLA Alcohol & Drug Abuse Studies Program.
In recognition of September being National Recovery Month, MusiCares has launched new online resources to continue our commitment to educate the music community about substance abuse issues. While MusiCares works in confidentiality with clients, the artists and managers who appear here feel so strongly about our programs and services that they wanted to speak publicly about our Foundation.
In addition, we’ve added a special performance clip that features Alice In Chains’ Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney with Metallica’s James Hetfield and Robert Trujillo performing “Them Bones” at the 2006 MusiCares MAP Fund Benefit Concert.
Over the years, the music industry has evolved into an amazing worldwide network of individuals and multinational conglomerates grossing over $50 billion a year. Yet, disturbingly, the very people whose creativity and ingenuity fuel this massive cash machine have few places to turn in troubled times. The tragic health and financial hardships faced by too many members of our musical family prompted the Recording Academy’s establishment of the MusiCares® Foundation in 1989.
It is the mission of MusiCares to ensure that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical or personal crisis. Its primary purpose is to focus the attention and resources of the music industry on human services issues that directly impact the health and welfare of music people.
